Tips for Driving in a Rainy Season

Driving during the rainy season can be difficult and demands additional caution to maintain safety. These tips can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safer journey during the rainy season. Always prioritize safety and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and others on the road.

Check Your Tires

  • Make sure your tires have sufficient tread depth for improved traction on wet roads. Tires with worn-out treads can cause hydroplaning, which occurs when the tires lose contact with the road surface.
  • Keep your tires inflated to the pressure recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Both underinflated and overinflated tires can negatively impact traction and handling.

Reduce Speed

  • Wet roads decrease traction, which makes it more difficult to stop quickly. Reduce your speed to keep control of your vehicle and allow yourself extra time to respond to unexpected situations.
  • Abrupt acceleration, braking, or sharp turns can cause your vehicle to skid. Drive smoothly to maintain stability and control.

Know When to Pull Over

  • If the rain gets too intense and you’re having difficulty seeing the road, pull over to a safe location and wait until the weather clears. Driving in severe conditions isn’t worth the risk.

Maintain Your Windshield and Wipers

  • Keep your windshield clean and free of streaks or smudges. If your wiper blades are worn out, replace them to ensure clear visibility.
  • Rain can cause your windows to fog up. Use your vehicle’s defoggers to keep the windows clear.

Brake Gently

  • If your vehicle has ABS, apply firm pressure on the brake pedal to prevent wheel lockup. If not, pump the brakes gently to avoid skidding.
  • Start braking sooner than usual to ensure a smooth and controlled stop.

Use Headlights Wisely

  • Turn on your headlights even during the day to enhance visibility. This not only helps you see the road more clearly but also makes your vehicle more noticeable to others.
  • Avoid using high beams in the rain, as they can reflect off the water and create glare, reducing your visibility. Instead, use low beams in wet conditions.

Increase the Following Distance

  • In wet conditions, increase the following distance between your car and the vehicle in front. This extra space gives you more time to brake and reduces the risk of a collision.

Avoid Standing Water

  • Driving through standing water can cause hydroplaning, where your tires lose contact with the road and glide on the water surface. If you must drive through a puddle, do so slowly and carefully.
  • Large vehicles like trucks can create spray that reduces your visibility. Maintain a safe distance and avoid driving too close to them.

Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions

  • Stay focused on driving and avoid distractions like using your mobile phone, eating, or adjusting the radio.
  • Not all drivers are cautious in the rain, so be mindful of their actions and be prepared to react if necessary.

Avoid Cruise Control

  • While cruise control is convenient, it’s best to avoid using it in wet conditions. You need full control over your vehicle to adjust speed and respond to the changing road conditions.
